Repair or replace? The honest answer

Plenty of plumbers will quote you a new unit before they've looked at the old one. Here's the rule of thumb we actually use.

Under 5 years

Usually worth repairing

Elements, thermostats, valves and anodes are all replaceable parts. A repair is a fraction of a new system.

5 – 10 years

Depends on the fault

A cheap part, fix it. An expensive one, put that money toward a new unit instead. We'll show you both numbers.

10+ years or leaking tank

Replace it

Once the cylinder itself is leaking there's no repair. Keep patching and you'll pay for it twice.
